In her new single, ‘Marianne’, Suki Summer turns heartbreak into something breathtakingly beautiful. The track is a lush blend of indie pop, with shimmering instrumentals and deeply introspective lyrics that evoke the weight of love lost too soon.
Suki’s voice is the star here, drenched in melancholy yet pulsing with hope. As she sings about a fleeting romance inspired by her European summer, her delivery feels as intimate as a confession.
Musically, the production is stunning. Basil’s arrangements are a delicate dance between bright, sunny tones and the shadows of nostalgia. Synth pads hum like distant memories, while layered harmonies create an ethereal atmosphere that envelops the listener. The instrumental outro feels like the perfect closing credits to a cinematic summer love story.
What makes ‘Marianne’ so special is how it balances specificity with relatability. Suki’s personal story—complete with literary references and her muse’s comparison to Sally Rooney’s Normal People’s Marianne—grounds the song in reality. Yet, its emotional core speaks to anyone who has experienced the bittersweet nature of temporary love.
"This song explores my relationship with intimacy and vulnerability. I wanted this song to encapsulate the time we spent together which was beautiful and fun but also tainted with a sadness of knowing that when the summer ended so would our time together. The name of the song and subsequently the hook of the chorus ‘Marianne’ I credit to him. He noted my likeness to Marianne from one of his favourite books 'Normal People’ by Sally Rooney and also pointed out my resemblance to the actress Daisy Edgar Jones who plays Marianne in the TV adaptation. I think it felt so perfect and so sad that our shared love of this book and story, in many ways, also mirrored our reality", Suki shares.
With ‘Marianne’, Suki Summer doesn’t just create music; she creates worlds. This song is a must listen for fans of indie pop, dream pop, or anyone looking for a soundtrack to their own bittersweet memories.
