Unplugged Lounge Conversations with Lilly Nagy

With her unique blend of contemporary pop, tribal rhythms, and ethereal soundscapes, German artist Lilly Nagy is creating music that is as emotionally resonant as it is empowering. Her latest single, Sex Sold Politics, is a bold meditation on femininity, vulnerability, and the quiet strength found in softness, challenging societal expectations that often equate resilience with hardness. As Lilly continues to build a world where healing, self-worth, and artistic expression go hand in hand, we caught up with her to talk about the inspiration behind the new release, the role of feminine energy in her music, and how she's using her artistry to encourage deeper emotional connection.

Thanks for chatting with us at Sonic Sisters Magazine! Can you share a bit about how your journey into music began?

It feels a little bit like I started singing before I was able to speak. I started writing very early as well and at some point wrote my first song, which was horrible and called: Ich bin alt genug, which in English means: I’m old enough. I released my first song when I was 19 years old and decided after trying out a few other directions in life, that music is the one thing that makes me the happiest. 

Who have been some of the most significant influences on your musical style?

ABBA! I’ve been obsessed with them since I was a child and still am today. I think they have such a unique style and their music truly is timeless.

And which female musicians or women in the music industry have inspired your journey?

I love Billie Eillish for being so vulnerable in her music, as well as Lana del Rey for presenting her music in a really soft, strong  and feminine way which is something I admire.

How do your personal experiences shape your songwriting, and what do you hope listeners take away from those connections?

Like most people, I went through really difficult times in my life. There is one episode I had a few years ago, that still inspires most of my songs I make today. I want people to hear true vulnerability in my music and take energy and a feeling of being understood from that.

Congratulations on your new release ‘Sex sold Politics’! What inspired this particular song?

Thank you so much! I had many experiences in my life, where I felt uncomfortable because of how men have treated me which at some point made me so angry. I had one specific experience. I met a lovely, wonderful guy in the gym in Miami Beach, that took me out on one of the most romantic, beautiful dates I ever had. For the second date, he invited me to join a dinner with his friends. One of them was someone, that most people in the world know and his way of talking about women drove me so crazy. I had a calm conversation with him, listening to his world and political views and wrote the title “Sex sold Politics” down the second I came home from the dinner.

What song (not your own) has had the biggest influence on you and why?

The Wind, by Cat Stevens. I listened to it during most of my difficult and also most beautiful times of my life.

Is there a song in your catalog that holds a special personal meaning for you? We'd love to hear the story or inspiration behind it.

A song I recently released called “I’m Healing“. I was heavily inspired by using specific frequencies, tones, shamanic drums and specific words to trigger the unconscious mind into feeling scientifically better during and after listening to it.

What are some of the aspirations you have for your music moving forward?

Making more Healing songs that almost go into a medical direction, for example I’m currently working on a song against headaches.

What advice would you give to emerging female artists who are just starting out in the music world?

Don’t copy anyone!
